From pollen count to pollen potency: the molecular era of aerobiology.

چکیده
In 1873, Charles Harrison Blackley recognised pollen as the cause of hay fever and ‘‘hay asthma’’ [1]. For the first time, he collected pollen grains with a kite that had a sticky tail and then he counted them. Being affected by seasonal asthma himself, he also performed the first skin prick test on his own arm. Since then, aerobiology (from Greek á r, aēr, ‘‘air’’; bioz, bios, ‘‘life’’; and -locı́a, -logia), a branch of biology that studies airborne organic particles, including pollen grains and fungal spores, has played a key role in the study of the relationship between allergic diseases and pollen. Although thousands of experimental studies have supported the role of pollen in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis, asthma and conjunctivitis, data from epidemiological studies were controversial in many cases, casting doubt on the pollen count (i.e. the number of pollen of the same type per cubic metre of air) as a reliable proxy of allergen exposure.

Variation of the group 5 grass pollen allergen content of airborne pollen in relation to geographic location and time in season.
BACKGROUND Allergies to grass pollen are the number one cause of outdoor hay fever. The human immune system reacts with symptoms to allergen from pollen. OBJECTIVE We investigated the natural variability in release of the major group 5 allergen from grass pollen across Europe. METHODS Airborne pollen and allergens were simultaneously collected daily with a volumetric spore trap and a high-v...
متن کاملQuality Assessment of Bee Pollen: A Cross Sectional Survey in Bulgaria
Background: Due to its nutrient content, a variety of spoilage microorganisms can grow in bee pollen, especially when handling practices are not appropriate. So, this survey was designed to assess the physicochemical and microbiological properties of bee pollen collected from Bulgaria. Methods: In June 2014, 13 fresh and 19 dried bee pollen samples were collected from Bulgaria. Water activity ...
متن کاملMolecular Cloning and Expression of Cro s 1: an Occupational Allergen from Saffron Pollen (Crocus sativus)
Background: The cultivation of saffron is expanding through the southeast of Iran, and allergy to saffron pollen occurs in workers involved in processing this plant. We aimed to clone, sequence and express a major allergen involved in saffron pollen allergy, and to compare the recombinant with the natural allergen. Methods: The N-terminal amino acid sequence of Cro s 1, an allergen from saff...
